There was a Baptist, an Episcopalian, a Lutheran, a Catholic and a Reformed Guy

Go Figure: Yesterday I found myself in a Baptist church building, at an Episcopal church installation service, sitting next to a Catholic bishop, singing songs by Luther and Chris Tomlin. The church was First Baptist Church of Orlando (with the Southern Baptist Convention) which has the largest sanctuary in the region. The Episcopal installation service was for Rev. Gregory Brewer who was consecrated as the fourth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. This diocese is one of the most conservative in the nation. I was there invited as a local seminary president—(we have Anglican students at the seminary and RTS grads who serve in all brands of the Anglican church). The Catholic bishop was there for the same reason as I was. We were both seated in the dignitary section, invited as special guests. The music… well, this service did it all—there was a choir, orchestra and praise band. There were anthem hymns in the best Anglican tradition, Latin songs, Taize songs, the best of Christian contemporary songs—(In Christ Alone, etc), and the service ended with A Mighty Fortress is Our God–the great Reformation hymn. I suspect the music reflects the new bishop. I kept looking to see if the Catholic bishop was singing Chris Tomlin and Luther. He was! I have no further comment on this than that. In God’s providence we were surprisingly thrown together at a very interesting moment worshiping with about 2000 others.

So…..there was a Baptist, an Episcopalian, a Lutheran, a Catholic and a Reformed Guy. This sounds like the beginning of a joke. But it’s no joke!

Below is a clip from Rev. Gregory Brewer’s Speech. He has a good perspective and seems to be leading his flock in a great direction.  To see the whole service go here.
